A continued surge in Egypt sales, better demand for Spain and Greece, but another drop for Turkey were the main booking trends on the German package holiday market last month.

German bookings for holidays in Hurghada and also Marsa Alam again grew very strongly in September, the latest monthly figures from leading reservations provider Traveltainment showed. Hurghada had an 86% rise in bookings and Marsa Alam as much as 121% as Germans booked more winter sun holidays on the Red Sea coast.

After several months of disappointing bookings, there were better figures for the Canary Islands, the biggest winter holiday destination. Fuerteventura showed a 9% increase in bookings, while recent declines for the other main islands were lower last month. Las Palmas (-3%), Tenerife South (-8%) and Arrecife (-3%) all had comparatively better figures than in previous months.

Similarly, Palma, the largest destination airport in volume terms, improved by 4% after lower bookings in the previous two months.

In addition, Greece had a good month on the German market in September after weaker sales over the last few months. Bookings for Heraklion rose by 27% year-on-year and Rhodes was up by 35%.

In contrast, Turkey remained in the doldrums. Antalya suffered another high double-digit drop with a 36% fall in bookings compared to the same month last year. However, it remained the second-largest destination airport last month in terms of sales volume.
